Chief designer Ikuo Maeda founded the design language “Kodo – Soul of Motion”. He made bold improvements to Mazda’s design. This language was started from the concept car Shinari showcased at the 2010 LA Motor Show. Up to now, it has shaped and enhanced the design of Mazda since then. Kodo Design has grown in popularity ever since. Many models based on Kodo designs have won awards. Last year the Mazda3 model won the World Design Car of the Year award.
Kodo Design has been around for ten years. Since its inception, many Mazda models have been based on the Kodo Design platform. Recent models that adopt this platform are the iconic Mazda MX-5 long-distance road car. The MX-30 is Mazda’s first battery-powered car, also based on the Kodo platform. Basically Kodo Design is still about strong beauty.
Literally the word Kodo means “heartbeat”. If you think in the other direction, it means filling something with life. Kodo also means giving it a soul. Mazda has always designed based on this idea.
