Despite the difficult initial launch time, Golf is still named the best-selling car in Europe.
With more than 310,000 Golf cars sold across Europe, including 134,000 in Germany, the latest generation car has taken the position left by the Mk7.
Volkswagen introduced the Mk8 Golf last October, trying to make great strides in technology and infotainment while the mechanically the same.
“With the Golf 8, we are continuing the success of the previous generation. The car continues to set technical standards in many respects ”, said VW CEO Ralph Brandstätter. “After the COVID-19 boom in the spring has disrupted its market launch, the Golf will have to do a lot of work in the second half of this year.”
The Golf’s successful sales can also help VW get relief from the early troubles. As we reported in May, deliveries were halted for the first half of the year due to software problems.
However, during the past year Volkswagen also released a GTI, a GTD and a performance version GTE that boosted sales. High demand for hybrid models is also a big factor, as 1 out of every 3 Golf cars sold by 2020 is hybrid.
In addition to the Golf, Volkswagen dominates the sales rankings in Europe with the Tiguan and Passat being the 2nd and 3rd best-selling car in Germany in 2020. Meanwhile, the Golf R 315 horsepower has just been launched in November.
“I want to thank customers who have trusted us,” said Brandstätter. “But my gratitude also goes to my entire team for the outstanding work done in the face of the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The Golf Mk8 is expected to go on sale in the US this year as a model in 2022.
