Mercedes-Maybach sets a new standard
Any luxury and class item has a source, where inspiration comes from and creates them. Of course, Mercedes-Maybach is no exception. Back in the 1990s, when Volkswagen decided to acquire Bentley and BMW bought Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz was apprehensive and immediately took a bold action – building a limousine. which is luxurious enough to rival Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The first car was developed on the existing platform of the S-Class W140 and was first introduced to the market in 2003. At that time, although this car was highly appreciated in terms of engineering as well as large design, it was not still capable of fairly competing with rivals from the UK. Therefore, instead of the name Mercedes-Benz Maybach with the characteristic three-pointed star brand identity, this model became Maybach – an implicit move that affirms the “waking up” of the luxury car brand Maybach.
For those who don’t know, the Maybach brand was founded in 1909 by the talented engineer Wilhelm Maybach and his son, Karl Maybach. This means that the Maybach is even 27 years older than the Mercedes-Benz (1926). For those who really loved cars in the period before the 2nd World war broke out (1939 – 1945), Wilhelm Maybach was a name worthy of reverence. Until the 1940s, Maybach gradually became a famous luxury car brand associated with the nobility and royalty around the world. In addition to luxury cars, Maybach was also a supplier of tank engines to the Nazi army during World War II. After the war ended, Maybach suddenly announced a cease-and-desist.
In 2003, Maybach came back as a sub-brand of the Daimler AG Group with two main models such as the 52S and 62S. Although still being warmly welcomed by its long-time loyal followers, Maybach was unable to generate a sales breakthrough to satisfy the Daimler AG management unit. Within 10 years of returning to the auto industry, Maybach’s sales fell to about 3,000 units. It was known that Maybach lost more than 350,000 USD (at that time) for each car delivered to customers. There is no reason for Daimler to continue to hold onto this unfortunate “child”. In 2013, Maybach announced its shutdown for the second time.
It seemed that Mercedes-Benz had really failed before Bentley and Rolls-Royce, but only a year later, Maybach’s aura once again rose. But this time the Maybach is no longer a Maybach car, it is merely the most advanced version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It seems that the German car manufacturer has decided to reposition the segment for this brand, no longer directly confronting Rolls-Royce in the “home field”. In fact, this is a very wise move when after only 3 years, sales of Mercedes-Maybach are 9 times higher than sales of two models Maybach 52S and 62S within 10 years.
Mercedes-Maybach S-Class 2022 – “Luxury item”
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class 2022 is a true luxury “item”, it always sparkles in any condition. The new generation Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is developed based on the S-Class W223 launched at the end of last year. The more advanced version is the Mercedes-Maybach S680 4Matic 2022 which is expected to be available at US dealers in the first half of 2022, the official price has not been announced yet. In Germany, customers can now order the new S680 with prices starting from 164,565 Euro. Regarding the powertrain setup, it is quite surprising that the Mercedes-Maybach S680 4Matic 2022 is now equipped with a 6.0L V12 twin-turbo engine for a maximum capacity of 621 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. That’s right, we weren’t mistaken! The V12 engine block has officially returned, but it will no longer be available on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but only for a single version of the Mercedes-Maybach.
However, the 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission can only handle a maximum of 900 Nm of torque, so the 6.0L twin-turbo V12 engine block on the new generation has been slightly tweaked, no longer capable. produces 1,000 Nm as on the previous Mercedes-Maybach S650. However, it is still powerful enough to give the 2.3-ton sedan the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds, which is about 0.3 seconds faster than its predecessor shared V12 engine block
