Volvo will launch a small electric SUV, competing with the Hyundai Kona EV

The Volvo XC20 is an electric urban SUV in the lower segment of the XC40. This will be the rival of the Hyundai Kona EV or the Kia e-Niro.

Volvo is working on expanding its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio by introducing a new line of electric SUVs. Earlier, the Swedish automaker announced that all of its products would switch to fully electric by 2030.

Currently, this car company is promoting its plan to sell half of its total car sales is electric cars. Volvo recently announced a new electric SUV called the XC100. In addition, the company also trademarked two new models, XC10 and XC20, which are electric SUVs in the lower segment of the XC40.

The XC20 is a pure EV model, Volvo hasn’t released any specifics yet, but says it will appear at the global launch of its new models. Volvo confirmed the electric SUV will use a platform developed by parent company Geely, called SEA.

The Chinese automaker announced the SEA platform on the Lynk & Co Zero Concept at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show. Meanwhile, Volvo’s smallest model is the XC40 built on CMA, a platform. Combined for electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles, and not suitable for urban models.

In addition, due to the development and use of materials sourced from Chinese suppliers, the SEA platform is cost-effective.

The Volvo XC20 will use a smaller battery than the XC40 Recharge, which is good enough to provide a range of 350 km on a full charge. The Volvo XC20 will compete with rivals such as the Hyundai Kona EV or the Kia e-Niro in the electric urban group.

Specific information on the new model will be announced by Volvo next month. In addition, the flagship electric SUV Volvo XC100 is expected to be launched in 2022. This model is built on a second generation large car platform, named SPA2.

This means that the XC100 is larger than the XC90, the maximum length can be up to 5.5 meters. Specifically, the XC100 will be about 300 mm longer than the XC90, significantly longer than the BMW X7 or Mercedes-Benz GLS models. The Volvo XC100 comes with a mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric engine option. Vehicles will be sold in major markets such as the US, China and Europe.
