Watch the “smoke and fire” acceleration of the jet-powered drag racing car.

On a straight road of just over 400 meters, the car equipped with a jet engine was able to reach a speed of nearly 483 km / h.

While drag racing can be traced back to the 1940s, long before the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) was founded in 1951, it wasn’t until the mid-1960s that dragsters started running. with a new jet engine that really attracts a lot of attention. That’s when the FIA allowed people to use them for land-based record efforts.

Naturally, jet racing has become the most powerful vehicle on the planet and set new records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. No less than five new records were set in October 1964, with the speed increasing from 665 to 863 km/h in just 25 days.

The 600 mph (966 km/h) mark was surpassed by Crag Breedlove in 1965, while Andy Green became the first racer to break 700 mph (1,127 km/h) in 1997. Green also became the first person to break the speed of sound later that year, when he hit 763 mph (1,228 km/h) in a Thrust SSC. This achievement remains the land speed record as of 2021.

However, the Bonneville Salt Plains and the Black Rock Desert aren’t the only places you can see a jet car in action. Although it doesn’t happen often, these crazy vehicles also appear at drag racing events across the US. The jet-powered dragster in the video below, called the Unbridled Spirit, was recently showcased at the Kentucky Dragway in Clay City, where it nearly clocked 483 km/h over a quarter mile. (402 meters).
But ultimate speed isn’t the only spectacular thing about seeing a jet car on a drag track. Everything about a car like this is “overdone” and incredibly stimulating. The elements of acceleration, speed, smoke, fire, and sound are completely different from any other land vehicle.
This car is so noisy that you will go deaf if you get close to it without proper ear protection. It’s so fast that you might miss its phenomenal launch if you blink. If that’s not too much for you, you can even cook a hot dog when a jet car drives by.
With some dragsters capable of passing the 483 km/h mark in a quarter mile, the Unbridled Spirit isn’t the fastest jet car, but it’s still an awe-inspiring machine.
