American electric car maker Tesla will start operations in the Indian market early next year. This is stated by India’s Minister of Transport, Nitin Gadkari.
Accordingly, Tesla is preparing for a plan to “attack” the Indian market, a market that is considered to be full of potentials for this car company. It is likely that Tesla will enter India in January 2021, although the official date has not been announced, but CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter that the move will happen “probably. Definitely this year ”.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla in October, said the company will enter the Indian market by 2021
India’s transportation minister, Nitin Gadkari, told Indian Express that Tesla might consider assembling and manufacturing in India depending on its sales in the country.
According to the Economic Times, the first car that Tesla brought to this billion-population country could be Model 3, with a starting price of about 5.5 million rupees (about 74,800 USD). The report adds that Tesla may open EV orders as early as January next year and start shipping in June.
The Indian government has recently made efforts to reduce its dependence on oil to reduce environmental pollution. However, the lack of investment in infrastructure and manufacturing is a barrier to Tesla’s production plans here.
Gadkari earlier announced plans to add charging stations at about 69,000 gas stations. The Indian government has also reduced the tax on goods and services on electric cars to 5%.
Mr. Gadkari also said that Mercedes-Benz is intending to launch its electric truck in India. “I truly believe that India will become the world’s number one electric vehicle manufacturing hub and will lead the way in electric vehicle production”
